The great leader Comrade Kim Jong Il, the genius of ideology and theory, established the Juche-oriented outlook on history for the academic world with a rich knowledge of and insight into the field of history as well as other subjects.

Until the early 1960s, historians in our country had held that it was Silla (one of the three kingdoms) that unified the three kingdoms (Koguryo, Paekje, Silla) which had existed in our country for a long time in the ancient times, and Kim Yu Sin, the general from Silla was a noted general.

Those days, some historians had accepted literally the historical records found in "Samguksagi (Chronicles of the three Kingdoms)" written by flunkyist historians, not having analysed and judged the Korean history from the Juche-oriented point of view. As a result, so-called "Silla Orthodoxy" had been an accepted theory until that time.

Therefore, all the historical essays including Korean History reference books, to say nothing of Korean History textbooks, were based on this "established theory" by that time.

At this juncture, the great leader Comrade Kim Jong Il made public his historic essay "On reexamining the question of the unification of the three kingdoms" on October 29, 1960. In his essay he illustrated the invalidity of "the theory of the unification of the three kingdoms by Silla" on a scientific basis, making a turning point for conducting a research into the Korean history, based on the Juche-oriented outlook on history.

First in his essay, the great General pointed that the history of our country before and after the 7th century had been written centered on Silla and the theory of the unification of the three kingdoms by Silla was not consistent with the historical facts.

Second in his essay, the great General explicated that it had been Koguryo that conducted a constant struggle to realise its aspiration for the unification of the three kingdoms and therefore, he continued to argue that the idea of the Silla ruling circles on the unification of the three kingdoms, the nature of the wars against Koguryo and Paekje, and personages who commanded the wars should be judged in different way.

Next in his essay, the great General demonstrated that the nature of the struggle conducted by the people from three kingdoms against the aggressors from the Tang Dynasty should be analysed and judged correctly and the position of Palhae in writing the history of our country should also be clarified accurately.

The great General, in the end of his essay, argued that the term "Unified Silla" should be corrected, and the history of our country should be accurately written from the Juche-oriented point of view, by critically analysing the historical records written by big-powerist and flunkyist historians.

The Juche-oriented outlook on history and methodology formulated by the great leader Comarde Kim Jong Il made it possible to correct all historical writing distorted by big-powerist and flunkyist historians, to newly write and systematize the then history of our country with Koguryo in its centre instead of Silla.

Thanks to the historic essay "On reexamining the question of the unification of the three kingdoms" made public by the great leader Comrade Kim Jong Il, the Juche-oriented methodology of studying history was established in the academic world and the theory centred on Koguryo became firmly accepted in writing the history of our country, smashing the Silla-centred theory.
