The Scientific Elucidation of the Center and Ideological Basis of the Party's Unity and Cohesion

The Workers' Party of Korea is developing day by day with strong fighting capacity and high dignity envied by all the revolutionary parties. This is associated with the immortal feats of Chairman Kim Jong Il who provided the ideological and theoretical guidelines for strengthening the party into an invincible revolutionary one united around the leader by giving scientific clarification of the center of the party's unity and cohesion and its ideological basis for the first time in history.

The central and ideological basis of the party's unity and cohesion is the primary problem in strengthening the unity and cohesion, the lifeblood of the working-class party. As the party is a political organization of people united by the common ideology and ideals, unity must be ensured if the party is to exist, and unity must be based on one center and one ideology.

In the past the international communist movement emphasized unity to a considerable extent, but it failed to scientifically clarify the center and ideological basis of unity.

The preceding working-class leaders like Marx and Engels recognized the inevitability of the leadership of the party in the revolutionary struggle, founded and developed the revolutionary party of the working class for the first time in history, and in the course they also set forth theories on the unity and cohesion of the revolutionary party. In particular, Lenin, in his works "What Is To Be Done?" and "One Step Forward, Two Steps Back" defined the working-class party as an advanced and organized unit of the working class and the highest form of organization among all the organizations of the working class, and said that the working-class party should be a militant organization united organizationally and ideologically.

However, the preceding revolutionary theories of the working class failed to clarify the center and ideological basis of the unity and cohesion of the party.

This historic task was successfully carried out for the first time in history by Chairman Kim Jong Il who had boundless loyalty to the leader and outstanding ideological and theoretical wisdom.

During his revolutionary activities at Kim Il Sung University, Chairman Kim Jong Il, with his deep insight, deeply understood the importance of scientific clarification of the center and ideological basis of the unity and cohesion of the Party. He made a scientific elucidation of the center and ideological foundation of the party's unity and cohesion in several works including the concluding speech "Let Us Consolidate the Ideological and Volitional Cohesion and Unity of Party Members Based on the Leader's Revolutionary Ideology" at the general membership meeting of the party cell of Class A, 3rd Grade, the department of politics and economics in Faculty of Economics at Kim Il Sung University on September 19, 1962.

Chairman Kim Jong Il said:

"The unity and cohesion of a working-class party must be based on one ideology, its leader's ideology. A party which is not united on the basis of its leader's ideology cannot be called a party in the true sense of the word, and is no more than a rabble.

Our Party should be united, based on the great revolutionary ideology of Comrade Kim Il Sung, its founder and leader."

First of all, he said that the centre of unity and cohesion of the party is the leader.

Just as everything in the world is formed with the core at the centre and moves and develops, there should be core-like center in achieving the unity and cohesion of the party. Unity and cohesion without center cannot be called unity in essence.

The centre of unity and cohesion of the party is the leader of the revolution. The leader originated the guiding ideology in the revolutionary struggle, awakens and organizes the popular masses to found the party and steadily develops the party into the guiding force of the revolution. The existence of the party is inconceivable apart from the leader's idea and leadership. Therefore, the party should be united around the leader.

Chairman Kim Jong Il also clarified that the ideological basis of the unity and cohesion of the party is the revolutionary idea of the leader.

A party is an organic entity that exists and works with ideology as its blood. Just as a man cannot live if he is mixed with other types of blood in his body, a party cannot maintain its existence if it allows other ideas in the party. Only one ideology must exist within the working-class party and it must be united on it as an ideological basis.

The idea which is the ideological basis of the unity and cohesion of the party is the revolutionary idea of the leader. A revolutionary party is a political organization founded and developed on the basis of the leader's revolutionary ideology and struggling to realize the leader's ideology. Therefore, the ideological basis of the unity and cohesion of the party should be the revolutionary ideology of the leader.

Indeed, the idea of the center and ideological basis of the unity and cohesion of the party clarified by Chairman Kim Jong Il is the original idea that newly clarified the fundamental principle of building a working-class party in the relations with the leader for the first time in history.

Thanks to this ideology clarified by Chairman Kim Jong Il, the WPK could be strengthened into an integral organization and an ideological purity firmly united around the leader and on the basis of the revolutionary ideology of the leader. This is the immortal exploit performed by Chairman Kim Jong Il for the strengthening and development of the WPK.
