The Department of Hygiene, the Faculty of Hygiene, Pyongyang Medical College, KIM IL SUNG University is the one which has had the proud history of over 70 years since appearance under the care of the Mt. Paektu peerless great men who devoted their all devotion to the training of national technical talents and which is the mother department of the education of preventive medicine and the prevention of diseases.

It was started as the Department of Hygiene of the Faculty of Medicine when the great leader built KIM IL SUNG University, which was the first training base of national cadres in our country on October 1, Juche 35(1946), to solve the problem of national cadres after liberation.

The first chief of department was Mr. Bae Yong Gi, who the great leader Kim Il Sung sent credential and called into the university. It existed as the department of hygiene, the faculty of hygiene when the great leader built the Pyongyang Medical College to train more national cadres in medical area needed for the fatherland and the people on September 9, Juche 37(1948).

During the postwar period, the department of specialties including environmental health, occupational health, pediatric hygiene, nutritional hygiene, hygienic epidemiology was developed as the stem from the department of hygiene.

The department trained many scientific and technological talents in the area of hygiene who had the ability to solve the problems for accomplishing the great leaders' idea of preventive medicine and the Party's policy on preventive medicine and the teachers in the department volunteered for service in battlefield and achieved brilliant successes in the work of the wartime military medical service and antiepidemic work.

The subject of hygiene was opened up in Juche 37(1948), the one of hygienic epidemiology in Juche 95(2006) and the first textbooks were written and published and continued publishing many textbooks and references including "General Hygiene"(1966), "Public Health"(1973), "Hygiene"(the textbook for the college of education)(1981, 2010), "Hygienic Epidemiology"(2007, 2010), so the department contributed largely in the development and education of hygiene.

The teachers in our department conducted many research works for the health care of people and the prevention of diseases including the study for the standardization of growth values and the establish of the measure for improvement of growth by investigating and analyzing of children's growth state of our country for several decades(dissertation of doctor, 1961), the study on prevention of poisoning of CO which is environmental poisonous factor in living house(master, 1986) and the study for establishing the effect of UHF to some physiological functions of the living and the development of the protective tools of individuals(master, 1987) and the study on the deodorizer for sanitation to remove a bade order in water closets and published many valuable successes of studies to solve the urgent problems in the practice of prevention.

And the nine-hole-coal-briquette which is the product of introduction of the result from the study on prevention of CO poisoning in living house is still widely used as heating fuel in dwelling houses today.

We are now conducting several researches to prevent health disorder by protozoa of water, to develop health foods necessary for the protection and the improvement of health of people and for the prevention chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease and metabolic disease and for the acceleration of the growth of children with national resources.

We will never forget the ardent love and solicitude of the Mt. Paektu peerless great men for the Pyongyang Medical College, KIM IL SUNG University and in order to reward to them, keeping the behests of the great leaders and the high spirit of prioritizing, respecting and loving of people of the respected leader comrade KIM JONG UN in mind, the department will bring about the new century revolution in education, so raise the quality of education decisively and change completely the condition and environment of education.

Studying the scientific and technological problems for the protection of the health of people and the prevention of diseases and introducing into the practice of public health effectively, the department will contribute for people to enjoy the highest civilization in the high level.
