The Development and Introduction of Software for Recognizing Paper Drawings

 2017.9.14.

The Intelligence Technology Institute, Information Science College, Kim Il Sung University has developed "Ryongnamsan", a software for recognizing paper drawings, to make contribution to the modernization of national economy.

The mission of the software for recognizing paper drawings is to input the engineering drawings printed on paper, using scanner, and automatically convert them into electronic CAD files/drawings.

As the age of machine-made industry has been converted into the age of information industry and of knowledge economy with the development of the science and technology, it is required to make reusable for CAD/CAM systems the numerous old paper drawings manually drawn by human designers.

To this end, it is necessary to develop paper blueprint recognition systems by the introduction of artificial intelligence technology for converting the old paper drawings into a reusable form for CAD/CAM systems.

At present, on a world-wide scale, there has been finished the study of paper drawing recognition systems and the commercial software products is being widely used.

The software of our own, at first, takes as input the paper engineering drawings using a scanner, splits them into figure and string areas, then recognizes and identifies them using OCR and vector conversion module, and finally store them into CAD data-type DXF structure files.

Then the DXF structure files are read and redrawn by Solidworks SDK, a CAD Tool, to be converted into CAD-type DSW files which real size exactly corresponds to the size on the 1:1 drawing.

The resulting engineering design drawings, with a complete reusability in CAD/CAM systems, is playing a important role in the modernization of the national economy, including the modernization task of Kim Jong-tae Electrical Locomotive Complex.

The Intelligence Technology Institute, Information Science College, Kim Il Sung University is going to accelerate the research work with the aim of upgrading the paper drawing recognition software to a cut-edge level of 3-dimensional component reconfiguration.
