The Spirit of Defending the Country in the 1950s Is the Most Precious Legacy Bequeathed by the Victorious Wartime Generation

 2024.7.24.

Etched in the proud history of the DPRK, filled with victory and glory, are the heroic feats performed by the victorious wartime generation who resolutely frustrated the armed invasion by the imperialists and defended with honour the sovereignty and dignity of the country with the resolute spirit of defending the country.

The Korean war forced by the US imperialists was the most severe ordeal for the DPRK and a fierce struggle decisive of the destiny of the country and nation.

In this fierce war, which could be called a showdown between rifle and A-bomb, the Korean people resolutely repulsed the US imperialist, who had boasted of being the "strongest" in the world, and its allied forces and brought about an epochal event of victory in the war.

The victory in the Fatherland Liberation War was the victory of Comrade Kim Il Sung's Juche-oriented military ideas, outstanding military strategy and extraordinary art of command and a historic miracle achieved by the heroic spirit of defending the country of the victorious wartime generation, who fought self-sacrificingly for the country.

The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un said:

"The spirit of defending the country created in the flames of the war – this is the most powerful strength that defies comparison with any physical strength and the most precious asset our new generation should inherit from the war veterans who are strong in ideology and faith."

The heroic fighters in the 1950s proved in practice that one is capable of defeating any imperialist aggressor forces when they are strong in their spiritual strength.

The spirit of defending the country in the 1950s is the most precious legacy that the descendants of the victorious wartime generation should inherit from the war veterans, who were strong in idea and faith.

This is because, first, the spirit is the nourishment for training all the people to be staunch fighters, defend the leader unto death.

The motherland precisely means the leader, and the embrace of the motherland is the embrace of the leader.

The essence of the spirit of defending the country in the 1950s is the thoroughgoing spirit of defending the leader unto death.

To defend the leader unto death guarantees the prosperity of the country, the genuine life and happiness of the people and the victory of the revolution.

It was the firm faith cherished the victorious wartime generation that the destiny of the country and nation can be firmly defended only when they placed absolute trust in the leader and were absolutely loyal to his ideology and leadership.

Comrade Kim Il Sung was the sun of life and banner of victory for the Korean people, who had keenly experienced the miserable fate of a ruined nation before their country's liberation.

In the days, when they were leading a genuine life for the first time as masters of land and factories in the liberated country, they cherished deep in their minds of the faith that only when they were led by the General, would they never become slaves of the imperialists and would the happy future of themselves and the younger generation be guaranteed.

With such unshakable faith, the brave fighters devoted their youth and lives for the safety of the General and the implementation of his order.

They defended him, becoming bullets and shields, and annihilated the aggressors, shouting "Long live General Kim Il Sung!"

The matchless heroism of the soldiers of the People's Army, who bravely fought hand-to-hand battles with the enemy and defended the country at the cost of their blood even in the face of the enemy's vicious military offensive, was based on their death-defying will to live up to their pledge to the leader to the end at the risk of their lives.

That is why our people and the younger generation cherish the image of the victorious wartime generation as a group sculpture of the heroes, both sung and unsung, like Ri Su Bok, Kang Ho Yong and An Yong Ae, who sacrificed their lives unhesitatingly for the one and only country, regarding the General as their motherland.

The spirit of death-defying implementation cherished by the workers at Kunja-ri, who made a great contribution to annihilating the US imperialist aggressors and ensuring victory in the war by producing weapons and ammunition in the dimly-lit caves in which water was dripping, and the simple words of a peasant from Poptong, who said in the period of the strategic temporary retreat that only when he went to where Comrade Kim Il Sung was, he could find a way to survive and the Korean people can win the war, vividly show the noble loyalty of our people to their leader.

Only when we absolutely trust and support the leader and implement his orders and instructions on the principle of unconditionally carrying them out, can we defeat any formidable enemy and always emerge victorious. This is the most precious ideological and spiritual wealth handed down by the great victorious war generation to posterity, and herein lies their outstanding exploits.

The following is part of a note left by a war veteran who took part in the battle of crossing the Raktong River:

"Every year, when the anniversary of victory in the war approaches, I picture in my mind the Raktong River.

Many years have passed since then. I'd like to make a request to the coming generations. Always remember the brave soldiers of the People's Army who dedicated their youth and lives by braving fire and water to carry out the orders of the Supreme Commander on the Raktong River. If you live and struggle in the spirit and mettle of those days, you will always emerge victorious."

Today's general advance is a struggle to defend the leader.

The generations have been changed several times, but today's general advance continues with the struggle to defend the leader unto death, as all the people regard loyalty to the leader as their life and soul, their greatest mission and honour as the generation in the 1950s did.

When all the people apply the spirit of death-defyingly defending the leader of the victorious wartime generation in their work and life and uphold the plans and intentions of the Party Central Committee through practice, the difficulties facing us will be eliminated and the prestige of our country will be further demonstrated.

The great spirit of defending the country is the most precious heritage of the victorious wartime generation because it is sustenance that trains all the people to be true patriots who cherish everything on this land and devote themselves to glorifying it forever.

What is important in the spirit of defending the country in the 1950s is the patriotic spirit of valuing the country more than life itself and defending it with a do-or-die will.

The Fatherland Liberation War was a great challenge for the DPRK, which was only two years old.

However, our people and officers and men of the People's Army squarely faced the imperialist allied forces and fought bravely against them with an ardent love for their hometowns, villages and motherland and confidence in their own strength.

Patriotism is not an abstract concept, but a noble ideological feeling that sprouts and grows up from loving even a blade of grass and tree of the country.

The greatest expression of patriotism is the defence of the country.

The Fatherland Liberation War was a confrontation of ideology and spiritual strength with the imperialists.

In the days of the war, the Korean people and the soldiers of the People's Army dealt a crushing blow to the imperialist mercenaries with an ardent love for their country.

Our people, who had lived under all sorts of maltreatment, rightlessness, ignorance and darkness, lived only five years creating a new life with the joy of national liberation.

In those days, however, the DPRK was engraved in their hearts as the whole of their life, and the factories, which were seething with production activities, and fields, where rich crops were undulating, were precious ones to be defended at the risk of their lives.

The Fatherland Liberation War clearly showed what amazing miracles are wrought when a simple and ordinary people rise up death-defyingly to defend their precious things.

The battle to defend Wolmi Island, in which the soldiers fought against the huge enemy armed forces numbering 50 000, the battle to defend Height 1211, in which the soldiers repulsed enemy's attack dozens of times a day, and other battles to defend the heights of the country calling the heights of the country were their heights, and the struggle the civilians fought to defend their beloved home villages clearly show how ardent and warm was the patriotic spirit of our people, soldiers of the People's Army and children's guard.

The "theory of air superiority" and the "theory of ship superiority," much touted by the enemy were shattered by the heroic struggle of the People's Army soldiers filled with an ardent love for their country.

As the brave fighters on the front and all other people, united as one, waged a do-or-die resistance, all the places where the aggressors put their feet became "punch bowls" and "heartbreaking ridges" and, the myth of the "mightiness" of the US imperialists was shattered.

The world-startling myth of war victory in the 1950s is a military miracle wrought by the ardent patriotism of the Korean people.

Our free life, our genuine motherland, beautiful mountains, rivers and fields and precious natural resources are unthinkable apart from the patriotic spirit and feats of the victorious wartime generation who defended the inch of the land of the country at the cost of their blood.

In our society today there are many honest people who are working with patriotism like the roots that support a giant tree on an invisible land and like snow that melts itself and gives life to the earth.

When all the people, learning from the victorious wartime generations, work hard to lighten the burden on the country and become the cornerstone and pillars of the state, our national power will be doubled and the victorious advance of Korean-style socialism will be accelerated.

The great spirit of defending the country is the most precious legacy of the victorious wartime generation because it is the driving force that trains all the people to be indomitable fighters who can brave any trials and difficulties.

The road of defending the country and achieving its prosperity is not a smooth one.

Only when all the people courageously foil the challenges and obstacles that stand in the way with an indomitable struggle, can the dignity and honour of the country shine and the sustained development of the state be achieved.

The three years of the Fatherland Liberation War clearly proved that there is a limit to physical strength but no limit to the strength of the masses possessed of an indomitable spiritual strength.

During the Fatherland Liberation War, our people and the soldiers of the People's Army fought against the formidable imperialist enemies, who were incomparably superior numerically and technically, and struck the enemy with terror at every battle with matchless bravery, self-sacrificing spirit and mass heroism.

Heroes Jang Thae Hwa, Kim In Thaek and Kim Ryong Thaek opened up roads for charge by their units by blocking the enemy pillboxes with their chests. Hero Jo Kun Sil showered bullets on the enemy by pressing the trigger of his heavy machine with jaw when he had lost his arms, and Hero Ro Thae Jin had mowed down the enemy soldiers by holding his hot mortar with his hand when they approached him as near as 45 metres. These heroic self-sacrificing spirit and mass heroism displayed by the People's Army soldiers, both sung and unsung, gave birth to heroic Korea.

The military miracles unprecedented in the world history of wars, created in the sky, land and sea, are attributable to the indomitable fighting spirit, with which the soldiers and people waged stubborn offensives without hesitation, firmly believing in their own strength.

Hero Jo Ok Hui, who was arrested by the enemy in the period of the strategic temporary retreat, shouted "Long live General Kim Il Sung!" at the execution ground, and the people in the rear turned the belt with their bare hands to produce weapons and ammunition and devoted their all to increasing food production for the front, braving gunfire. Their heroic mettle made the world people look up to the heroic country in the East.

Under the wise guidance of President Kim Il Sung, the generations of the Fatherland Liberation War performed brilliant feats in the history of the country, displaying an inexhaustible spiritual strength in postwar reconstruction and socialist construction.

The heroic struggle waged by the people in the rear and the soldiers of the People's Army, who bravely fought for victory for the freedom and independence of the country and for the happy life of their descendants, laid the foundation for the valour and mightiness of the new Korea, created the first and foremost asset and foundations of invincibility of our state and people, which cannot be bartered for millions of tons of gold.

The fighting spirit of the victorious wartime generation, who brought about the greatest victory and honour in the face of the greatest national crisis by displaying the greatest courage, serves as the driving force for training all the people to be indomitable fighters in the present struggle for the comprehensive development of socialist construction.

The DPRK will always remain powerful and victorious as there are the people who are fighting by dint of the indomitable spiritual strength of the generation who saved the destiny and future of the country and created legendary tales of victorious war of heroic Korea by fighting A-bomb with rifle.
