Precious Teachings for Deciding on the National Flag

 2025.9.2.

Our national flag is fluttering in the clear and blue sky of our country symbolizing the valiant spirit of Juche Korea advancing vigorously under the bright blueprint for building a powerful socialist country.

Nearing the significant founding anniversary of the DPRK, our people are recollecting with deep emotion the undying feats that President Kim Il Sung performed in state building, looking up to our national flag shining with the might of Juche Korea.

President Kim Il Sung said:

"The national flag is a symbol of a state. The flag of our Republic clearly reflects the people-oriented, democratic and revolutionary character of the Republic as well as the dignity and honour of the Korean nation."

One day in January 1948, President Kim Il Sung met the designers of national emblem and national flag, and said that the establishment of national emblem and national flag is one of the very important national affairs, and that making a good emblem and national flag is of great significance in glorifying the dignity and honor of our country, which was eclipsed on the world map in the past, and enhancing the national pride and honor of our people.

That day President gave precious instructions for deciding on the national flag.

President said it would be good to use red, white and blue for the colours of the national flag, adding that the red colour symbolizes the blood shed by the anti-Japanese forerunners and the patriots of the DPRK and the invincible might of our people united close around our Republic, the white symbolizes honesty, uprightness, purity and smartness of our people, while the blue symbolizes the vigour and spirit of the Korean people struggling to build a new democratic society and for the global peace and progress.

He went on to say that if a five-pointed red star is depicted in the white circle of the national flag, it can show the tradition inherited by the DPRK, the sagacious mettle of the advancing people and the bright prospect of development of our country in an artistic way.

On listening to his instructions, the designers realized that they had been affected by flunkeyism and dogmatism.

In fact, there was a tendency among them to imitate the designs of foreign national flags.

It represented the brilliant victory and bright future of the DPRK.

On November 15, 1961, when conducting his revolutionary activities at Kim Il Sung University, Chairman Kim Jong Il told his classmates who wanted to know about the story associated with our national flag that some people even made an absurd suggestion that they should draw a plow in a white circle when designing the national flag.

Then he said that the President rejected it and made sure that red five-pointed star is depicted since it symbolizes the bravery and heroism of our Korean people who are always victorious and advancing.

As Chairman Kim Jong Il clarified, our national flag was wonderfully completed under the direct guidance of the President.
