In the DPRK, people think of triplets and quadruplets when they talk about a silver-decorated knife and a gold ring.
Since early times Koreans have enjoyed using ornamental knives, out of the simple desire to protect their life and happiness from all sorts of dangers, and Korean women have worn rings, regarding them as a symbol of happiness. Children are regarded as the king in the socialist system. So when male triplets and quadruplets are born, they are given silver-decorated knives as gift, and for females the gold rings, being regarded as the happy event of the nation.
But few people are aware of what a great love is associated with the knife and ring.
One day in May, Juche 72(1983) Chairman
The designers buckled down to designing. They tried to find out suitable ones day and night, but in vain.
One day, the Chairman acquainted himself with their work and came up with his idea. It was a silver-decorated knife and a gold ring.
He said that it would be better to inscribe their birthday on the silver-decorated knife and gold ring with three of them together to show the full date of birth, which would help them identify their brothers or sisters correctly even if they were separated unexpectedly.
The designers were deeply moved by his words.
His love for children was the warmest in the world to make the silver-decorated knife and gold ring for triplets and quadruplets and inscribe their date of birth on them, even taking thought for what could hardly happen.
Later, designers carved the year of birth on the blade of the first silver-decorated knife, the month of birth on the second and the day of birth on the third respectively, as instructed by the Chairman. And they carved the full date of birth on one side of all cases, thus making it possible to know their birthday and their standing in order. Three petals of sun flower were cut in the center of gold ring in a meaning of becoming a flower following the sun, with three rubies inserted inside to portray triplets, while the day, month and year of birth was curved inside gold ring in turn like the silver-decorated knife.
