The orthopedic research team has been working on the project for the manufacture of home-made hip prosthesis and the establishment of hip replacement technique in our own style.
They analyzed a lot of imaging data including the radiologic films and the computed tomography findings of femur and acetabulum according to the gender of Korean people, and collected the measuring data of height-level zones in the coronal, sagittal and horizontal plane in order to design and set a standard of the artificial joint suitable for Korean peoples' physique.
On the other hand, through the experimental and clinical trials, they evaluated the biocompatibility of metals for the artificial joints, which were alloyed in the vacuum induction furnace. Thereafter, they established the production line of metal and plastic components by CNC-technology in a good cooperation with material processing specialists.
They performed total hip arthroplasties and bipolar hip hemiarthroplasties on 306 patients with severely impaired walking due to hip joint disorders and post-traumatic sequelae.
They also established our own style scoring system of hip joint based on the follow-up data and Korean's lifestyle.
Short-term follow-up demonstrated that remarkable improvement of hip joint function was observed in over 93% of patients and therefore, the patients could walk freely.
Through the campaign for attaining the cutting-edge the prize winners channel their energies to conduct an in-depth research on the hip arthroplasty as well as on the knee arthroplasty, upholding our party's policy of attaching foremost importance to science and technology.
