Juche-Oriented Theory Of Language On Properly Combining National And World Common Things In The Linguistic Development

 2023.5.30.

From the historical point of view, the question of linguistic development has been largely discussed in the context of the creation of a common world language, mainly by artificial methods, and so on.

In modern times, the moves are getting more and more intensified to make different nations use English instead of their own national languages to make it the world common language amid the advocacy of so-called globalization by the dominationist forces.

Based on a scientific analysis of the law of linguistic development, the Juche-oriented theory of language clarified for the first time in history the need to properly combine things original to a certain nation with world common things.

President Kim Il Sung said:

"In developing our spoken and written language, we should keep in mind the common trend of linguistic development of the peoples of the world.

It goes without saying that we should not discard the national characteristics of our language too hastily, simply in order to bring its development into line with the common world trend."

To properly combine the national and the world common things in linguistic development is an important principle to be maintained in developing the national language and solving the problem of the national language.

The Juche-oriented theory of language clarifies, first of all, that national things should be actively sustained in the development of language.

We can say that what is national in the development of language is the whole of the national characteristics of the national language.

In other words, it is the ensemble of national characteristics expressed in the important components of language, such as speech, meaning, vocabulary and grammatical structure.

These national characteristics are important factors that should never be overlooked in the development of the national language.

In order to actively sustain the national things in linguistic development, it is necessary to preserve in every way the linguistic elements peculiar to the nation.

This requirement which takes into account the excellent linguistic elements created by our people and associated with our national traditions has nothing to do with restorationism which "inherits" even the outdated and backward elements that are contrary to modern demands and aesthetic tastes.

In particular, developing a language mainly with the pure native words created and developed by the members of the nation through generations can also help to bring the national language closer to what is common in the world.

It is due to the fact that the formation of the world common elements of language itself is made up of elements of national things.

In other words, the development of national things in the development of language is the main source of the development and enrichment of common things in the world.

Therefore, in the development of language in the present era of independence, the active promotion of national things reflects the law-governed direction of linguistic development and constitutes the fundamental principle to be maintained in the development of national language.

The Juche-oriented theory of language also states that the common direction of the world in the development of language must be taken into account.

What is common in the development of language is the linguistic elements of the world common character, which are different from those of the nation.

These linguistic elements are distinct from the common elements of foreign origin in the national language.

Of course, the world common elements exist among the elements of the national language and among the elements of foreign origin, as well.

The world common linguistic elements are formed by the elements of the global character among the linguistic elements present in the individual national language.

Each national language is a matrix that produces world common linguistic elements.

The words such as "Juche", "Taekwon-Do", etc. are elements peculiar to our national language, but they are common elements worldwide.

Also, words like "computer", "nano", "piano", etc. are world common elements worldwide.

Out of this, in developing languages, we must not reject the world common linguistic elements without any hesitation or regard them as targets in revising vocabulary, allegedly as exotic elements.

In particular, there are many common terms in the fields of science, technology, sports and music.

These terms are the categories of vocabulary that must be kept alive.

One of the important questions here is to correctly interpret and define the concept of the world's common linguistic elements.

If foreign elements that do not assume world common character are regarded as the common elements of the world and introduced and continued to be used, it allows foreign elements to penetrate into the national language.

And if we reject and dispense with even the world common linguistic elements, we will go against the law of linguistic development.

One of the important questions is that the meaning of sustaining the world common linguistic elements in linguistic development should not be confused with the movement to make English the universal language.

Today the dominationist forces are making desperate efforts to obliterate the national characteristics of other national languages, calling for eliminating the "linguistic barrier" on a worldwide scale.

As a result of these moves to obliterate other languages, many languages have already been damaged and killed, and are in a risk of extinction.

Those who truly love their nation and national language must overcome the practice of using foreign spoken words without any world common character, and, in particular, heighten their vigilance and thoroughly reject the moves to obliterate the national language under the signboard of "globalization".

The scientific accuracy and validity of the Juche-oriented theory of language on properly combining national and world common things in the development of language can be proudly explained by the reality of the cultured Pyongyang dialect which is developing into a genuine model of socialist national language.

Thanks to the seasoned leadership of the Workers' Party of Korea, the work for revising vocabulary was conducted vigorously, making unnecessary foreign-origin elements in the cultured Pyongyang dialect to form a well-regulated system.

And the linguistic elements common to the world are actively used in various fields including science and technology, while in good harmony with the traditional national linguistic elements.

Today the Pyongyang cultured language is being refined and enriched culturally in conformity with the independent will and demand of the masses of the people, while giving full play to its national character in all aspects of its structure, including vocabulary, speech and grammar.

Indeed, the Juche-oriented theory of language on properly combining national things with the world common things in the development of language is another original and scientific theory which has revealed the clear way of developing the national language of our times and solving the problem of the national language.
