Lumbar disc protrusion, often found in clinical vertebral diseases, results in high rate of temporary disability; therefore it is of concern among many researchers.
At present there are many therapies for the treatment of lumbar disc protrusion including drug blocking therapy, traction therapy, Korean traditional medicine treatment, operation treatment.
In the past a lot of researches have been conducted to treat lumbar disc protrusion but the effective rates were not high and there were defects such as side effects of the medicine.
Acupuncture and manual therapy were applied to the patients of lumbar disc protrusion which has a high morbidity and much disability in manual therapy chair, Pyongyang medical college,
Eighty six cases of patients diagnosed as lumbar disc protrusion by clinical symptoms and objective tests were randomly divided into research group(60 cases) and control group(26 cases).
Research group received acupuncture at EX-B2 of corresponding lumbar segment, GB30, BL36, BL37, BL40 and BL60 points. Needles were retained for 15 minutes after needling sense were appeared.
Then they received manual therapy. Relaxation methods such as rolling, rubbing, pushing, beating were applied to the waist, gluteal region and lower limb for 15 minutes and then adjustment methods such as twisting waist, lumbar adjustment by pulling and pressing, stretch movement of a sciatic nerve and rolling waist, shaking waist at prone position were applied. 2~3 methods among them were selected according to the condition of each patient.
The research group first received acupuncture and then manual therapy; Control group received only acupuncture.
Patients received therapy once a day for 7 days (a therapeutic period). If symptoms were not improved, after 3 days, they received second therapeutic period.
Result: The total effective rate of the combination of acupuncture and manual therapy in the patients of lumbar disc protrusion was 96.6% and the average therapeutic date was 20.32±0.63d.
We will display the superiority of the best socialist public health system of our country in the world by exploring the appropriate manual therapy techniques for treatment of lumbar disc protrusion.
