Even the Scientific Fantasy Should be Korean Style

Chairman Kim Jong Il said:

"Establishing Juche in scientific research is an important principle our party has consistently maintained. The aim of studying and developing science is to find solutions to the scientific and technological problems arising in the revolution and construction, bring glory to our people-centred socialism and make our country prosperous."

Chairman Kim Jong Il penetrated deep into the role and significance of the science and technology in reforming the nature and society to meet the requirements of Juche idea and in progressing the revolution and the construction. He taught clearly the attitude and methodology which should be firmly maintained by the scientist and the students in the field of scientific research, thus giving the powerful weapons to conquer the unknown world of science as early as the period of his revolutionary activities at Kim Il Sung University.

Here is an emotional story that he saw to it that one should firmly maintain Juche-oriented attitude, the point of view and methodology in scientific research, saying even the scientific fantasy should be Korean style.

In the evening of 16th September Juche 50(1961) Chairman Kim Jong Il visited the house of a student who was studying at the Faculty of Geology of Kim Chaek College of Technology (today's Kim Chaek University of Technology) without letting him know beforehand. He gave 3 wooden boxes which he brought with him to the student who even didn't say greetings properly, surprised by his unexpected visit. Even though the wooden boxes were not big, they were rather heavy, containing more than 80 kinds of Korean representative mineral samples and the explanation about them. In fact, those mineral samples were selected and brought by Chairman himself in order to help the student studying geology, who was frustrated due to the lack of the mineral samples.

Chairman Kim Jong Il benevolently looked at the student who didn't know what to do for he was too grateful. He looked at the designs scattered in the room and asked the student whether those were the ones for the "barrage of the Behring Strait". The student had been dreaming of being a famous doctor of geology since he was a child and got the fantasy to change the world climate drastically by building dam across the Behring Strait with the aspiration to create a miracle surprising the world after entering the college.

Since then, had the student been trying his best to design the barrage to be constructed in the Behring Strait, because of which he got the nickname of "Behring Strait".

He said "yes" and Chairman Kim Jong Il said that those who study science and technology could also have scientific fiction. And he continued that we can't even picture the future of science and can't develop science itself without scientific fiction, imagination based on the reality.

And he also said meaningfully that scientific and theoretical hypothesis would be set based on the scientific fiction, and it would be elaborated as the systemized theory and the scientific doctrine through the painstaking research and study and the process of repeated failures and successes. In this sense the fiction could be considered as the wings of imagination for those people paving the new road of the science.

Truly, the teaching of Chairman Kim Jong Il was the profound and popular one on the history and the prospect of the development of science and technology, in which a lot of scientific fiction and hypothesis had become a doctrine, shone as the great inventions and transformed into the grand reality through the process of thinking and research.

The student could not resist to be rapturous with the feeling to have reached to the highest peak of the scientific world listening to Chairman Kim Jong Il. He said that he was designing the barrage of the Behring Strait to change the climate of Northeast Asia into the subtropical climate based on the concept from the interesting article of a foreign magazine describing the climate change by the dam construction to blockade a strait.

At that moment, Chairman Kim Jong Il withdrew smile and said in a meaningful tone; it would be good to have a grand fiction, but as we are Korean students, we do have to have a fiction to develop national economy by reclaiming the tideland on the coast of the West Sea of Korea instead of daydreaming about developing the economy by blockading the strait in other country and changing the climate. He continued that one should give full play to their imagination keeping their feet firmly planted to the reality of our country, putting his hand on the shoulder of the student who was swelling with emotion.

The Korean style fantasy!

It was the clear and popular answer on the attitude, point of view and methodology of the scientific research which should be kept surely by the scientists, technicians and young students of Korea in their scientific research.

As the story above shows, Chairman Kim Jong Il gave the precious teachings to develop everything on this land for the benefit of the Korean revolution and people as befitted to the demand of Juche idea even before the age of 20.

The West Sea Barrage, a grand monument startling the world, was built and a lot of other sensational miracles were wrought in the DPRK amid the Korean style fiction encouraged by Chairman Kim Jong Il at the student's house.

Korean scientists have been being created miracles day after day on the basis of the Korean style fiction taught by Chairman Kim Jong Il.

The world people will see now and ever the Korean scientists creating more and more miracles competing with and surpassing the world under the leadership of the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un.
