Saying that one should Become a Communist before Becoming a Doctor

 2024.4.12.

In the Chollima era, there is a boy known to the whole country. The boy's name is Pang Ha Su.

This is not because he performed a meritorious deed for the country. He was just a child of ordinary parents. After receiving the second miraculous life, he was treasured and loved by the people across the country.

What was the miraculous force that kept the beating of the boy's small heart, and gave a clear smile to his pretty face even when his true parents gave up their son for lost.

President Kim Il Sung said:

"In view of the specific features of their occupation and the importance of the tasks they have assumed, public health workers should become communists before anybody else, and the most thoroughgoing communists at that."

It was on November 13, Juche 49(1960) that Pang Ha Su, an 8-year-old boy, was taken to the then Hungnam Fertilizer Factory Hospital in a critical condition after suffering a third-degree burn over 48 percent of his body.

In a little over three months after that, the boy, who had survived death thanks to the devoted efforts and sincerity of the medical workers of the hospital and the blood and flesh of many people, regained his health day after day.

The President was very pleased reading the fact that a skin transplant operation to save the life of the boy had been performed in the Hungnam Fertilizer Factory Hospital in the then newspaper "Minjuchongnyon". He informed the officials of the Party Central Committee of the fact on the phone immediately and told them about the need to read the article without fail and the form and method to carry the article in Rodong Sinmun.

Three months later he highly appreciated the work of the medical workers of the hospital and sent them medicine for the treatment of the boy with a letter of congratulations.

The medical workers were really excited and encouraged by the letter sent by the President who said that it was a laudable deed since they had performed the noble ideological and mental traits of the communists serving the people and devoting their all to the happiness of the people in their practical act.

The doctors and nurses conducted treatment in a bolder and scientific way with conviction that the boy would surely be recovered and grow up to be a son faithful to the Party and the leader thanks to the President's warm love for human beings and due to the genuine sincerity of a number of people in the era of the Workers' Party.

The President's deep care for the boy and the medical workers of the hospital continued.

A nurse from the Hamhung Medical College Hospital was also present at the National Conference of Activists among Worker-Peasant Correspondents on March 7, Juche 50 (1961).

President Kim Il Sung had a talk with the nurse during the interval of the conference and asked about the health of the boy and the subsequent health of the people who had taken part in the transplant operation.

The President's constant warm care instilled boundless strength and courage into the medical workers and as a result of the successful third and fourth operations, the boy not only got over a deadly pass but also regained his original beloved face.

It was on May 7th.

Half a year after the burn, Pang Ha Su appeared on the platform of the Mass Rally of Hamhung City celebrating the inauguration of the then Vinalon Factory in the bosom of President Kim Il Sung with a brighter and cuter face.

All the people across the country witnessed with great emotion the moment when Pang Ha Su reached the platform of the highest glory he had never dreamed of step by step with a bunch of flowers in his hands since he had been on the threshold of death a few months before.

The President, resting his eyes with pleasure on the boy who was making a salute in the way of the Korean Children's Union after presenting the bunch of flowers, said, "Ever ready! Ever ready!" and hugged the boy in his arms for a long time.

At that moment the eyes of the President and tens of thousands of people gathered in the square were filled with tears of emotion.

Looking around the officials, the President said with excitement that the boy was Pang Ha Su and that the child who had almost died was now alive and he was the son of the Workers' Party. He held and waved the small hand of the boy encouraging him to wave higher with all his might.

The President called the chief surgeon of the hospital nearby and told the accompanying officials that he was the man who had donated his flesh for the patient and such a man was a communist repeatedly.

And the President again praised him highly calling him a communist revolutionary in the era of the Workers' Party.

Looking at the magnificent scene of the procession shouting hurrah at the top of their voice towards the platform, the President raised the hands of the chief surgeon and a student of Hamhung Medical College nearby who had taken part in skin transplantation.

That evening the medical workers of the hospital were honored to see the opera "Boundless Love for Man" at the then Provincial Art Theater in South Hamgyong Province in the presence of President Kim Il Sung.

After seeing the opera the President called the medical workers of the hospital and said that they had done a good job and the boy would not have survived if he had been born in a capitalist society.

He highly appreciated the loyalty and boldness of the working class and the medical workers to the revolution, saying that they had been able to do a good job because the hospital was situated among the working class in Hungnam, an industrial city.

At the National Meeting of Activists in Public Health held a month later, all the medical workers received precious teachings from the President.

He said that the most important traits of the public health workers are the boundless loyalty to the Party and the people, deep love for man and the endless devotion for the patients and that they should not only be doctors who cure diseases, but also play the role of propagandists who educate and remould the backward people. His instructions greatly excited and encouraged all the public health workers and served as a source of strength and a guideline for their activities.

Pang Ha Su started his second life and the power that brought about the miracle was the teachings of the President that one should become a communist before becoming a doctor and his deep love for man.
