A Study Method Taught to Soldiers on Cooking Duty

 2024.4.19.

During the anti-Japanese revolution, President Kim Il Sung set forth the revolutionary slogan "Study is the first and foremost task for revolutionaries" and ensured that the study should be intensified decisively among the commanding officers and soldiers of the Korean People's Revolutionary Army.

And he made strenuous efforts into their study.

The fact that he intensified the study among the commanding officers and members of the KPRA and trained them all as true revolutionaries is associated with his boundless warm love for the revolutionary fighters and embodies his noble idea that the training of the core is associated with the victory and future destiny of the Korean revolution.

Chairman Kim Jong Il said:

"Comrade Kim Il Sung made sure that the guerrillas studied many things in various ways."

Among many stories that President Kim Il Sung intensified the study of the commanding officers and soldiers of the Korean People's Revolutionary Army and trained them all to be true revolutionaries, there is a heartfelt fact that he paid deep attention to the study of the soldiers on cooking duty and gave meticulous guidance to them.

In the period of the anti-Japanese armed struggle, a cooking section was a supply service unit which took charge of cooking in the units of the Korean People's Revolutionary Army, and cooking was mostly done by women guerrillas.

At that time there weren't enough main and subsidiary foodstuffs, not appropriate cooking facilities, and the unit moved at any time because of constant battles with enemies. Under these conditions, it was not easy to do the cooking, which was also a kind of battle for them.

So, all the members appreciated all their efforts they made for the preparation of meals, but no one cared about their study.

At that time, they were not able to study full time since they had to do a lot of work which needs elaborate care. In addition, the company was often away from the guerrilla zone, so they had less time to share their daily life with the members of the company and they didn't pay much attention to their study.

Besides, there was little organizational control over their study.

Therefore, some of them had a wrong idea on their study that they could be able to cook three meals a day without studying, and they got gradually used to it, so they did not feel any remorse even when they didn't do their political study.

President Kim Il Sung, who was deeply concerned about this, told the commanding officers that they should pay deep attention to their organizational life and, in particular, to their study because they would be separated from their units in case the guerrilla army was away from the guerrilla zone. He personally met soldiers on cooking duty to see how they did their study and taught them that study is an important revolutionary task.

One day when he visited the Company 2 of Wangqing and guided the problems arising in the strengthening of the combat capability of the company and the supply service, dropped in the kitchen where the soldiers were working.

He said that they have their hands full all the time, so they couldn't find enough time as the others do, adding that when they are busy, they have to come up with an appropriate study method accordingly.

However, they hesitated for a moment and didn't find out a proper answer. Then he told them in a soft voice that as a man can live only when he eats three meals a day, our revolutionaries can be genuine revolutionaries who fight for the people and the country only when they realize the reason through their study why they participate in the revolution; soldiers on cooking duty are not merely in charge of preparing meals, but that they should take on the position as platoon commanders and company commanders in the future if the revolution requires, they should be commanding officers for the building of a new country when they defeat the Japanese imperialists and the country is liberated.

He continued that let us find out the study method together and how we could find time to study and what we should study, etc. Then he told them a story that he had written a play "A Letter from a Daughter" for performance to stimulate enthusiasm for learning among peasant farmers from Wujiazi area when he was preparing for the anti-Japanese armed struggle.

President Kim Il Sung vividly told the story that the heroine of the play received a letter with good news from her daughter, but she was illiterate, so she asked the others to help her read it, but in the end, she came to a conclusion that her daughter died and cried out.

Listening to the story of the play, which profoundly illuminates the truth of life, "Knowledge is power" in a humorous way, they burst into laughter at first, then in the end, they even wept, looking back their lives and studied hard afterwards.

When they studied in the way that President Kim Il Sung taught, they started to have confidence in their study.

After they put rice into a pot for cooking, they soon wrote letters on the ground. When they were on the mountain avoiding from the "punitive operations of the enemies", they practiced writing letters over the ashes from bonfires.

As a result, where there were guerillas, there were full of letters they practiced all over the place, especially on the mountains and snowfields where there were soldiers on cooking duty.

Actually, before they were beginning to understand the principle of revolution and social development, they used to be so passive in a seminar, but now they scrambled to participate in a presentation and even felt disappointed when they missed the chance to present.

Meanwhile, President Kim Il Sung ensured that notebook supplies should be doubled for soldiers on cooking duty.

No great man in history, like President Kim Il Sung, paid close attention to the study of the soldiers on cooking duty and put his heart and soul into the establishment of revolutionary habit of study in the revolutionary ranks fighting with arms.

Under the dynamic guidance of President Kim Il Sung, the guerrillas on cooking duty became iron-willed fighters strong in ideology and faith firmly armed with the Juche-oriented line, strategy and tactics of the Korean revolution, and could play a key role in the final decisive battle for national liberation and building a new country after liberation.
