"Samhung Middle School" Impressing the True Meaning of Broad Knowledge, Noble Virtue And A Strong Physique

 2024.8.14.

What guarantees the future of the country and nation.

There is a phrase that always comes to mind when one recollects the immortal exploits of the President in the education of the rising generations.

"broad knowledge, noble virtue and a strong physique"

Now it can be easily found in the notebooks of young students, but many people will never know how it came into being.

President Kim Il Sung said:

"The teachers should bring up the students to be able workers with broad knowledge, noble virtue and a strong physique for building a new country. I named this school Samhung (Sam means three, and hung prosperous in Korean–Tr) Middle School because I wanted it to bring up talented people who are knowledgeable, virtuous and healthy and who can contribute to making the country prosperous."

On October 28, Juche 34 (1945), the President attended a reception at the playground of Changdok School during his visit to Chilgol.

After the reception was over, he met the teachers in the classroom of Changdok School and stressed the importance of school education of young children.

The great leader gave detailed instructions to set up the school and personally looked around the building where the school would be even after the time to leave.

And he taught them one by one the problems arising in the establishment of the school, including wiping out a spacious playground in the wide open space behind the building, digging a well around the school and installing water pumps to pump water, constructing a big school building at the foot of the mountain if the country's economic condition is better in the future because of its dangerous location as it is near the railway.

Hearing the news of the establishment of a middle school under the guidance of the President, the people turned out in the construction of the school, full of great joy and hope.

Due to the harsh colonial enslavement education policy of the Japanese imperialists, the Korean people couldn't go to school and their ardent desire, not to repeat the bitter past having lived in all sorts of national maltreatment and contempt, led the construction to the completion at an early date.

He sent trucks, lathes and water pumps for the construction of the school and solved all problems arising in the opening of the school several times.

President Kim Il Sung called Kang Yun Bom on November 22, Juche 34 (1945) and said that as teachers played an important role in the education of the rising generations, they should improve the quality of education and students who are too old for school and children of religious people should be admitted to learn our language and long history and brilliant culture of our nation.

And he said that the school should make textbooks itself for the time being by pooling the wisdom of the teachers as the state would give priority to the compilation of textbooks in the future instead of translating and teaching the textbooks used by the Japanese imperialists because of the difficult situation.

That day, the President said that an important issue in the education of the rising generations is to make students grow to be good pillars of the country having broad knowledge, noble virtue and a strong physique, and named the school "Samhung Middle School" in the sense that it will bring up talents who are knowledgeable, virtuous and healthy and thus prosper the country.

After receiving the meaningful teachings guiding the way of the education of the rising generations, the teachers made all efforts to the education, always keeping in mind the phrase "broad knowledge, noble virtue and a strong physique".

Under the love of President Kim Il Sung who sent typewriters, paper and pencils and educational apparatuses and school things needed for new textbooks, Samhung Middle School was built as a wonderful site for learning.

One year later, on November 22, Juche 35 (1946), the President visited Samhung Middle School again on the first anniversary of its founding and praised the teachers, students and parents for their work.

And he gave precious instructions that the students of Samhung Middle School who learn and grow up in a place associated with the history of our resourceful and brave people's struggle should study hard and grow up to be pillars of a new country, knowledgeable, virtuous and healthy, true to the patriotic spirit of their ancestors, especially the noble fighting spirit of the anti-Japanese revolutionary forerunners who fought at the cost of their lives for the liberation of the country.

Looking around the school, the President instructed the headmaster to set up a dormitory for a few students who lived over 30 ri (12km) away from school and gave detailed ways for the school's operation including the provision of conditions for the students to perform various sports events including iron bar, parallel bar, wrestling and running.

Looking up to the benevolent image of President Kim Il Sung who is so concerned to bring up the students of new country to be excellent pillars of the country, considering everything carefully, the teachers kept back their tears of emotion.

Holding hands of the teachers one by one, the great leader expressed deep trust in the hope that Samhung Middle School would serve as an example in training the students to be good pillars of the new Korea knowledgeable, morally sound and physically strong and left school at dusk.

Many years have passed since then but recollecting the true meaning of the slogan "broad knowledge, noble virtue and a strong physique" suggested by the great leader, people appeal.

To those students who had grown up studying in the sunshiny classrooms even in the days of the Arduous March when the country was in the most difficult situation, and the students of the city and countryside, factories and fishing villages, small mountain villages and island branch campuses who were grateful for their new uniforms, "pine" schoolbags, "dandelion" notebooks and "sunflower" school supplies.

What guarantees the future of the country and nation?

Then they will speak from the bottom of their heart.

Thanks to the benevolent care of the fatherly leader who takes charge of the education of the rising generations as a parent of students across the country, the future of our country and nation is infinitely bright and rosy.
