Local Treatment Effect of Propolis Membrane on the Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis

 2016.11.19.

Propolis membrane is membrane including propolis to attach to the oral mucosa, effective concentration of drug is retained for a ling time.

Causes and pathogenesis of recurrent aphthous stomatitis has not been clarified and treatment is divided into general therapy and local therapy.

In order to relieve pain and inflammation of ulcers and to shorten the healing period, local therapies by many types of drugs such as gargles, solutions, pastas, gels, soluble and insoluble adhensive plasters and membranes have been used and shown their efficiency.

Propolis have excellent antibiotic and antiiflammative actions, antivirus, pain relief, and epithelium regeneration promotive actions, so it has been used widely in treatment of inflammation and wound.

And recently, with the deepening chemical analysis and pharmacological research on propolis, it's antiallergic action has been confirmed, too.

In general dentistry department of PyongYang Medical College of Kim Il Sung University, they have studied to shorten the healig period by using propolis membrane for the local therapy on RAS.

As the contrast drugs, essence of golden bell's leaves(EGBL)(National Standard: 34883-2012) and Volon(A Haftsalbe, from Germany) have been used.

They have examined antibiotic action of propolis membrane by measuring the number of salivary bacterium according to the time and the results showed that the propolis membrane reduced the number of bacterium until 2 hours and EGBL reduced significantly until 1 hour compared to before.

On the other hand, when 2 hours passed after applying drugs to ulcer, the number of salivary bacterium in the case of propolis membrane is less significantly than one in the case of EGBL(P<0.05)

They have also examined the inhibitory action on delayed allergic reactions with the influence to skin reactions by DNCB and found that the propolis membrane, EGBL and Volon inhibited clearly the delayed allergic actions and there was no significant difference betweeen the research group and contrast group.

As a result of examination of stimulation on injured skin with white rats, in case of propolis membrane, stimulation findings such as redness and swelling appeared 1 hour later and disappeared 24 hours later, in case of Volon, disappeared 36 hours laer.

By means of the results of examination of propolis membrane's stability according the period of restore with change of their properties, propolis membrane could be restored without any changes in closed package, at a room temperature for 2 years.

When they applied propolis membrane to aphthous ulcers, immediately patients felt pain relief, but contrast drugs didn't relieve pain.

Through these research results, they have concluded that propolis membrane is a slow delivery drug for RAS's local therapy.

They will continue their research work focused on improvement of propolis membrane's adhension to oral mucose.
