The Story How the First Relics of the Paleolithic Age were Unearthed in Korea

 2026.10.1.

President Kim Il Sung said:

"Historical remains of the Old Stone Age such as the Komunmoru relics, the grotto relics on Mt Sungni and the Kulphori relics have been discovered in the areas of Pyongyang, South Phyongan Province and North Hamgyong Province, respectively. Thus it has been proved that people began to live in the Korean peninsula in the first period of human history."

The first relics of the Paleolithic Age in Korea would not have been unearthed without the wise leadership of President Kim Il Sung who had boundless noble love for the country and the nation.

Whether a Paleolithic Age existed in Korea or not was not only an academic issue but is a serious issue arising in identifying of the origin of Koreans. It was the issue of finding the right ancestor of Korea.

Until the late 1950s, some flunkeyist scholars advanced preposterous sophism that Korea did not cover Paleolithic period for the reason that no remains of the Paleolithic period were unearthed in Korea. They also said that people who had passed through the Paleolithic period in other parts of the world moved to Korea.

To reject such sophism, the relics from the Paleolithic Age had to be unearthed without fail.

After the liberation of Korea, the President adopted "The Law for the Preservation of Treasure, Historical Spots, Scenic Spots and Living Monuments" which was the first law related to the preserve of historical remains and relics in Korea.

Later, the President issued the order of the Cabinet "On preserving and taking care of the remains and relics found in the course of construction of all kinds" while he was giving instructions to reconstruct everything on the debris of the war.

He also organized big archaeological research groups and excavation teams to unearth historical relics and provided a material and technical bases for archaeological excavation and research thus the remains from the olden days which had been buried in the ground for a long time could be unearthed.

In the course of the great nature transformation projects, historical relics and remains were unearthed in succession in different places, but unfortunately, the remains of the Paleolithic Age were not found.

The President, who understood the situation, said that there would be few remains from the primitive age and that our ancestors would have made needles from bones of animals and bamboo as they had no iron at that time. He also added Korean culture had already developed in that period.

Thanks to the devoted struggle of the archaeological research groups inspired by the instructions of the fatherly leader, the first Paleolithic site named Sophohang Site (then the Kulpho-ri Site) was finally unearthed in the early 1960s.

And in the historical site, the late Paleolithic and the mid-Paleolithic cultural relics were unearthed beneath the Neolithic cultural relics.

As the first remains from the Paleolithic Age were unearthed it became scientifically clear that the Paleolithic Age existed in our country and that people from that age lived on this land.

Under the wise leadership of the President, the relics from the Paleolithic Age including the Komunmoru relics were unearthed later and it was proved that Korea had a long history.
