President Kim Il Sung instructed to found the university first as a parent university of the country.

Democrats and educational personnel organised the association for supporting the construction of the university with venerated President Kim Il Sung as its counselor.

Reflecting the unanimous desire of Korean people, the decision concluded that the university in Pyongyang should be named after President Kim Il Sung.

At the beginning, the university had 7 faculties (Faculty of Literature, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Agronomy, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Railway Engineering), 24 departments, 30 classes, 1500 students and 68 lecturers. In October 1947, some celebrations were held for 1st anniversary of founding of Kim Il Sung University were held and decided the founding anniversary of the university as Oct 1st.

President Kim Il Sung delivered a historic speech on “Be Competent Workers Dedicated to the Building of a Democratic State”.

Scholarship associated with the President's love was awarded to the students of Kim Il Sung University according to Decision No. 133 of the North Korean People's Committee.

The Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Transport Engineering were separated into Pyongyang College of Industry (Kim Chaek University of Technology at present), the Faculty of Agronomy into Wonsan College of Agriculture and the Faculty of Medicine into Pyongyang College of Medicine. 5 faculties (the Faculty of Economy and Law, the Faculty of History and Literature, the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, the Faculty of Chemistry, the Faculty of Biology) remained.

19 students(13 from the Department of Physics, 6 from the Department of Mathematics) graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. President Kim Il Sung attended the 1^st graduation ceremony.

271 students graduated from the university.

The university moved to Jasong, Pyongyang, Jongju, Kusong and Sunchon to keep wartime education going on. The special preparatory course started in July, 1951 and teaching restarted from Nov, 1951.

He visited Paekjon-ri(then), Jasan sub-county, Sunchon County, South Phyongan Province and delivered a historic speech “The Prospects of the Fatherland Liberation War and the Tasks of the University”.

253 students graduated from the university in Paeksong-ri.

Exchange students from some countries including China, Mongolia and Romania attended lectures in Korean History Department in the Faculty of Korean Language and Literature.

He emphasized that the university should train more cadres for the postwar reconstruction, conduct scientific research to settle the scientific and technical problems arising in socialist construction and that due attention should be paid to development of modern and basic science as befitting its global tendency.

The badges of graduation and student were newly decided on and the gathering of the first-term graduates was successfully held.

Kim Il Sung University was honored to become the alma mater of a peerless great man. In the period of his university days, he took part in production practice in Pyongyang Textile Machinery Factory (then), Wasandong-Ryongsong road expansion project and military camping in Oundong. He presented a graduation paper "The Status and Role of County in Socialist Construction" on Mar 18, 1964.

It was held in Pyongyang Grand Theater in the presence of President Kim Il Sung.

The bronze statue of President Kim Il Sung was erected on Ryongnam Hill and the Revolutionary Museum of Kim Il Sung University was inaugurated.

The science library was newly established with a collection of 2 million volumes.President Kim Il Sung gave field guidance to the science library on Oct 18, 1970.

President Kim Il Sung sent a congratulatory message to the university.

President Kim Il Sung looked around newly built Natural History Museum, Factory with Gifted Machinery, Education and Science Exhibition, offices and lecture rooms in Building No.2. He made a speech "On Further Improving the Training of Our Cadres".

The catalyst research institute, computation research institute, electronic physics research institute, cytobiology and molecular biology research institute, electronic computation research institute, and atomic energy research institute were established.

President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il gave field guidance to the gymnasium on June 21, 1989.

Chairman Kim Jong Il sent a historic letter on “On Intensifying University Education as a Requisite for the Development of the Revolution”.

He inspected several spots of the university and had a photo session and observed an artistic performance together with the lecturers in the April 25th Culture House.

The diploma with the portrait of President Kim Il Sung and graduation badge were newly decided on as instructed by Chairman Kim Jong Il and were bestowed on all the graduates.

Chairman Kim Jong Il gave field guidance to the newly built swimming complex in Mar, 2009 and later on Sep 30, 2009. Chairman Kim Jong Il and the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un gave field guidance to the swimming complex on Dec 11, 2009.

On April 12 2010, Chairman Kim Jong Il and the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un looked around several spots of the university including the e-library.

The student badge bearing the images of smiling President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il was newly decided on as instructed by the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un.

The bronze statue of Chairman Kim Jong Il was erected with respect on Ryongnam Hill and the Revolutionary Museum was inaugurated as well.

The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un attended the ceremony of the apartment buildings for the educators and had a photo session.

The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un sent a historic letter “On the Basic Tasks facing Kim Il Sung University in the New Era of the Juche Revolution”.

The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un gave new houses in Ryomyong Street 1 700-odd houses to the lecturers and researchers of Kim Il Sung University.

Building No. 3, building No. 4, building of the Faculty of Chemistry, dormitories and a canteen were newly built.

Pyongyang University of Medicine, Pyongyang University of Agriculture and Kye Ung Sang Sariwon University of Agriculture separated from Kim Il Sung University.
